Highlights of the Herb Silvers Fabulous Fantasies Tournament
Fabulous Fantasies Las Vegas Pinball Tournament Review - The good, the bad and the ugly!!
The event cost was $50.00 for three days of free play pinball on 100 pins with a $5.00
per try entry fee on the tournament games. I (Paul Dean) was very enthusiastic
to see not one but two Stern, Pirates of the Caribbean pinball's by Disney, as
the main tournament games. These games were hot off the press so to speak and
the Fabulous Fantasies Pinball tournament players were the first players to see
and play the pins at a live venue as they were received here at the Las Vegas
Herb Silvers Fabulous Fantasies event before being released throughout the world.
Pretty cool! It was great to help Jim Belsito in the Referee position on the
Doubles Tournament. This is the best way to watch the skillset of the best players
in the world do their thing in pinball.
I wasn't used to this game and it basically taught me a lesson, which is if you
can't aim, you aren't going to do well at this game. My game took approximately
30 seconds. Many other players had a hard time with these Pirate pins as well and
many games were quick and low scoring. Even in the finals this game showed the
Pros that it new a few things and that it wouldn't be easy to score big points
on this game unless you were great with target play and perfect with ramp manipulation.
This Pirate game taught everyone how to curse like a pirate, as this was the game
from the abyss of Davy Jones dead man's chest, and many were frustrated by it.
However it did get great reviews. First known reference to the Davy Jones locker was in 1751.
World Famous Rick Stetta playing Eight Ball Deluxe
I was most impressed by the dynamic game play of Rick Stetta, winner of the
Herb Silvers Fabulous Fantasies Las Vegas Pinball Tournament. The old timers know
of his skills and shutter when they say his name. He has been playing for quite
some time, and is best known of his 1992 win of the world famous Papa Contest.
The other big surprise was the invasion of the Roller Girls which I cover a question
and answer series below. We even got a limosine ride to and from the Las Vegas
Hall of Game Pinball Museum, courtesy of Tim Arnold.

The Tournament Finalists played for the best 2 out of three games to determine
the winners. A coin toss decided who would play first and who would have pick
of the game. The Tournament Pinball Games: Gottlieb's Crosstown, Bally's
Captain Fantastic, Bally's 8 Ball Deluxe, Bally's Addams Family,
Sterns Pirates of the Carribbean.
Rick Stetta:
Apparently, no player wants to be matched up against him, especially if he has
the pick of the game because he is a master of the classic pins and his scores give
everyone an ache, as he is at one with the machine.
Rick Stetta's game play is unusual to say the least. When I first saw him play,
I was intrigued by the way he would physically bop around and maneuver while
playing. I thought to myself, what is going on with this guy, is he having a
nervous or conniption breakdown or what? It almost looked like he would walk
away from the machine at every shot and get close to a kneel. I didn't get it
and wasn't sure what he was doing or why he was doing it but I knew his score
was going higher and higher and he wasn't dieing. The ball just never drained.
On other shots he would contort himself to the left or right to get a better
view of where the ball was going. I thought, this must be the real pinball
wizard like the one in the song written by Pete Townshend, Tommy,
this must be the guy they made the movie after.
Nobody could come close to Rick Stetta's scores and when I inquired about
why he would leave the game in mid game it was explained to me that he would let
go of the flippers and the game every time he made a good shot so he could regroup
and wipe his hands. This was some part of system he had to stay within the zone.
It worked for him so well that he simply doesn't miss a shot. He made so many shots
perfect that he had lots of time in between where he didn't need to be playing
the ball as it was getting mega points somewhere on top of the playfield and not
coming down for quite a long time. His gestures emulated what the ball was doing
and I have never seen anything like this before. If you haven't seen Rick Stetta
playing pinball then you haven't seen pinball played perfectly!
He was great to watch and I am glad he won as he is really the Pinball Wizard
in every form of the word. I understand that he was the guy to beat in the
early 1990's then disappeared and now he is back!
I hope he takes Papa 9 as well. This is the next event on the tournament list
and the biggest event of the year where players from all over the world will be
competing for first place and the true World Pinball Wizard will be known. With
over $33,000 in cash prizes, I am sure this is the event that no great player
will want to miss.
Papa 9 was flooded two years ago and all of the pinball games have since been
replaced so this is quite an event with all brand new working games available
for the tournament.
My friends from the Orange County Pinball league/Inland Empire League didn't
fare as well as Rick Stetta. Jim Belsito and Daniel Stoddard made it
to the top 16 but however the curse of the black pearl got the best of them.
Jack Sparrow i.e. Jack Smith was no where to be found nor the key to the chest.

Don't miss out on the Las Vegas Side Show
When in Las Vegas Fabulous Fantasies was met by the Roller Girls of Roller Derby,
and I learned that every variety of life can get along together for a common interest,
which is pinball. Thank you Roller Girls for making life a bit more interesting!
Roller Girl at Fanastic Fantasies Tournament playing Frontier Pinball
What is a pinball tournament in Las Vegas without the Roller Derby Roller girl's?
That's right; Herb Silver's Tournament was invaded by these Roller girls complete
with roller skates and helmets. Do I Block or do I Jam? I have to admit it was
hard for me to concentrate on my pin skills with these girls skating around and
playing their favorite pinball games. Any one of those girls could have beat up
three pinball wizards with one blow. This was the most amazing spectacle I had
ever seen. These burly tattooed and bruised girls were walking around the pinball
nerds looking for a pin they could beat up on.
I am sure some of those pierced girls thought that these silver ball geeks were
certainly no match for them. But these girls were actually all very nice and I
am glad they came. It spiced up the place quite a bit. The 99% male pinball
players may have been glad these Roller girls were there but they were
so focused on their mastering of the pin that I don't know if they even saw these
girls skating around them. If they did see them, I noticed they were giving a very
wide berth to this operation. Can you guess what these Roller girls favorite pins were?
The Roller Girls Favorite Pin
This is the Pin that the Roller Girls fell in love with. There were at least
50 of these girls in the lobby as there was a Roller Derby tradeshow next door.
Several almost landed right on me as I was leaving the lobby of the Hotel
as I was in the way of their tackle football Frisbee game. It was quite to
my surprise that 10 burly tatood girls all dressed in black tight shorts
were sprinting to my position, as the Frisbee landed slightly to my right side.
Needless to say, I thought I was going to end up as ground meat!
Herb Silvers, coordinator of the pinball tournament, told all the girls that
they could come in and play the pins for free, and there were quite a few
who took him up on the offer.
Rollergames Pinball
1990 Rollergames Pinball by Williams
When I asked what made these girl's decide that they wanted to be Roller girls
they all agreed that they watched Roller Derby on T.V. and loved roller skating
so the natural conclusion was to try being a Roller Girl. Besides that, where
else can you beat up on other girls? This is a very competitive sport and
each girl had bruises up and down their arms and legs.
Bally's Surfers Pinball 1967
Roller girl's at Starbucks next to Fantastic Fantasies Tournament
I had to ask the girls some questions because there numbers completely
inundated the Plaza Hotel.
1. Why did you join the all girls Roller Derby Team?
ANSWER: To skate, to compete and to beat up on other girls who think
they are tougher.
2. Do you get paid to be Roller Girls?
ANSWER: No, this is an amateur league in which we hope to make a professional
league in a few years, as it is a growing sport.
3. How much does it cost to see your team compete?
ANSWER: About $10.00 to $15.00 but you can watch us at our practices sessions
for free.
4. Do you really hit each other or is it all orchestrated?
ANSWER: All four girls showed me several deep dark blue and black bruises
and ask if they looked real. They sure did.
5. What type of girl goes into Roller Derby?
ANSWER: The competitive sporty type who like to skate and like to win
in sports.
6. Is this game rigged so that the home team always wins?
ANSWER: It used to be like that and that killed the sport in the early
1980's but not their is no faking and these girls don't hold back.
This is the real team and nobody knows who will win.
7. Does it cost a lot to be a Roller girl or do you have sponsors?
ANSWER: We do not have sponsors and we pay out of our pocket all of
the expenses for travel and food, etc. We do it for the love of the
sport. We do have a medical plan and need it as there are many broken
legs, fingers etc., in this sport.
8. Do you do this full time?
ANSWER: No, we hold full time jobs during the week in all types of
professions, and some of us are housewives. This is the way we get
our aggressions out.
9. Do you all have Tattoos?
ANSWER: Yes, but it is not a requirement for a position as a Roller girl.
10. Isn't this a dangerous sport, as I see on T.V. girls being flung
into the audience?
ANSWER: Yes, you can land on a seat and your fall won't be broken.
It is best to land on a man sitting in the audience. They don't mind,
even though they get roughed up a bit in the process because many of
us land skates first or are in the cannonball position. We hate it
if we land on a little kid who could get hurt.
11. What makes a great Roller Girl?
Speed skating, strength skill and girl power. As well as having good
blocking and ramming skills.
12. What is your favorite pinball and do you like pinball's?
ANSWER: We love pinball's because you can hit on them and generally
do the same things you would do in Roller Derby. Our favorite game
is the 1990 Rollergames Pinball by Williams, and the 1980 Bally
Skateball, just about anything with wheels! But for some reason we keep
on tilting the games!
(Tilt) Definition
The Tilt mechanism is designed for the dual roles. It is an anti-cheating and
damage-prevention device, and the tilt mechanism also halts a game when a player
excessively shakes or slams the pinball machine to affect play. The game will
shut off temporarily and you will lose your turn as the flippers are temporarily
shut off as the game resets itself.
The very first pinball machine to feature a tilt sensor, Bally's Signal, which
came into play about 70 years ago, and since that time, most major production
pinball games have featured some form of tilt mechanism. Of course, the tilt
sensor found inside Signal is quite different from modern designs, and users
didn't originally call it a tilt device.
1980 Bally's Skateball Pinball
Thank you Roller Derby girls for your time and I hope to see you
in a match soon!

Target Roll
The 1957 classic game, Target Roll is a cross between pinball, roulette and craps.
Game play is just like craps, with the exception that instead of crapping out on
a 7 as in craps, on Target Roll you crap out on "70". In addition, points are scored
for the various holes you land in. Game is not a typical 3 or 5 ball game. Each game
can last as short as one ball or infinite balls until you crap out.
